Taunton is the county town of Somerset in south-west England, sitting on the River Tone in a valley between the Quantock Hills and the Blackdown Hills. Its historic centre is dominated by Taunton Castle, now home to the Museum of Somerset, and the town has notable Civil War and medieval connections alongside Georgian and Victorian architecture; good road links via the M5 make it a regional hub.
The cultural life includes the Brewhouse Theatre, the long-running Taunton Flower Show and sport at the County Ground, home of Somerset County Cricket Club. Economically it combines public-sector institutions such as Somerset County Council and Musgrove Park Hospital with retail, light industry and growing commuter links to Bristol and Exeter, while easy access to surrounding countryside makes it popular for outdoor activities.
