Barnstaple is the principal town of North Devon in Devon, England, set where the estuary of the River Taw widens towards the sea. It grew as a medieval market and port and still feels like a regional hub, with a mix of medieval and Victorian streets, the old Long Bridge and the covered Pannier Market at its heart.
The town is a handy gateway to Exmoor and the north Devon coast and is popular with walkers and cyclists using the Tarka Trail. Its economy today leans on retail, public services, light industry and tourism, while a lively local scene of markets, small festivals and venues such as the Queen’s Theatre keeps the social and cultural life active.
