Bideford sits on the estuary of the River Torridge in the district of Torridge, in north Devon, England. Its historic long bridge leads down to a working quay, Georgian streets and a lively pannier market, and the estuary opens towards Bideford Bay with surf beaches at Westward Ho! nearby.
Once a busy port for shipbuilding and the tobacco trade (and remembered for the 1682 witch trials), today Bideford blends maritime industry, tourism and creative small businesses, with ferries to Lundy and easy access to the Tarka Trail and the South West Coast Path. The town has a compact, friendly feel with galleries, festivals and independent shops clustered around the quay, making it a handy base for exploring north Devon's coastline and countryside.
