Thurlestone is a small coastal village in the South Hams district of Devon, England, famous for its weathered sea stack known as Thurlestone Rock - a natural arch that looks out over Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island. The village sits on the South West Coast Path within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with sandy beaches, clifftop walks and plentiful seabirds and seals drawing visitors for much of the year.
Historically a modest farming and fishing community, Thurlestone today relies heavily on tourism alongside local agriculture; you’ll find a handful of pubs, a church, holiday cottages and a nearby golf club that service the seasonal influx. The name is thought to relate to the “thirled” or pierced rock that defines the shoreline, and the village retains a quiet, village-green charm rather than the bustle of larger resorts.
