Tolpuddle is a small, picturesque village in rural Dorset, England, set among the rolling farmland and hedged lanes typical of the county and not far from Dorchester. It retains a timeless feel with stone cottages and a largely agricultural character, while drawing visitors who come for walks in the surrounding countryside and to see local heritage sites.
The village is best known as the birthplace of the Tolpuddle Martyrs story: in 1834 six agricultural labourers were convicted for forming a union and transported to Australia, a case that helped kick‑start the modern trade union movement. That legacy is kept alive by the Tolpuddle Martyrs' Museum and an annual Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival, which turns the quiet village into an important meeting place for labour history, political remembrance and community celebrations.
