Wool is a small village in the Purbeck district of Dorset, England, sitting in a peaceful valley not far from the Jurassic Coast. It has a surprisingly convenient transport link for its size, with a station on the Heart of Wessex Line that helps commuters and tourists alike, and the nearby army presence around Bovington (home to the Bovington Tank Museum) gives the area a mix of rural and military-influenced employment.
Despite the name, the village isn’t named for sheep fleece but has older place-name roots; its historic interest includes the old Woolbridge manor/bridge that features in Thomas Hardy’s novels and the general feel of a long-established Dorset community of farms, small shops and commuter households. Its location between Dorchester and Wareham makes it a handy base for exploring both the county’s countryside and its coastal attractions.
