Galleywood is a mainly residential ward and village on the south‑eastern edge of Chelmsford in Essex, roughly a few miles from the city centre. It functions largely as a commuter area with convenient road links and easy access to nearby rail services, blending suburban housing and local shops with a noticeably semi‑rural atmosphere.
The locality is best known for Galleywood Common, an extensive area of heathland and mixed woodland that preserves historic earthworks, including Bronze Age barrows, and is popular with walkers, riders and birdwatchers. Community life is focused around village halls, schools and small businesses, giving the area a strong village identity despite its proximity to larger centres such as Chelmsford and London.
