Map of the UK

The Dengie is a low-lying peninsula to the north‑east of Maldon in Essex, bounded by the River Blackwater and the River Crouch. Its vast salt marshes and mudflats, known collectively as the Dengie Marshes, are a nationally important nature area and SSSI, famed for wintering wildfowl and waders; the coast and hinterland contain scattered villages such as Bradwell-on-Sea and notable historic sites including the early chapel St Peter-on-the-Wall, built on Roman foundations.

Economically the area remains largely agricultural, with grazing marshes, arable fields and local shellfisheries complemented by a modest seasonal tourism and birdwatching trade. The landscape and history - from its identity as the Dengie Hundred to 20th‑century coastal defences and the former Bradwell Power Station - give it a strong maritime, rural character and a dispersed community life popular with walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.
