Clacton-on-Sea, on the coast of the Tendring peninsula in Essex, England, is a classic English seaside town facing the North Sea. It’s best known for a long promenade, sandy and shingle beaches and the traditional amusements clustered around Clacton Pier, which still hosts rides, arcades and seasonal events that draw holidaymakers and day-trippers.
The town expanded as a late‑Victorian resort when the railway opened up the coast to visitors from London, and tourism remains a key part of the local economy alongside a sizeable retired population. Like many seaside towns it has mixed fortunes - lively summers and quieter winters, ongoing regeneration efforts and some areas of economic challenge - while also boasting an intriguing historic note: flint tools found on the foreshore gave their name to the prehistoric "Clactonian" industry.
