Great Dunmow is a traditional market town in the district of Uttlesford, in rural Essex in England, lying near the floodplain of the River Chelmer and within easy reach of Stansted Airport and London. Its position on good road links has made it part traditional agricultural centre and part commuter hub, with a mix of independent shops, light industry and surrounding arable countryside.
Historically it retains a strong market-town character, with timber‑framed and Georgian buildings around the market square and a parish church at its heart. Culturally the town is best known for the quirky Dunmow Flitch tradition - a centuries‑old custom rewarding married couples with a flitch of bacon - and for regular community events that keep a strong local identity despite modern growth.
