Bishop's Stortford is a historic market town in East Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire, England, straddling the gentle valley of the River Stort. Its origins go back to the medieval period when the manor belonged to the Bishops of London, and the compact town centre still shows a mix of timber-framed buildings, an impressive parish church and a legacy of coaching inns that served travellers along the old routes.
Today the town combines a busy local economy and independent shops - centred around the historic high street and the Maltings shopping areas - with a strong commuter population thanks to fast rail services to London Liverpool Street and easy access to the M11 and Stansted Airport. That transport connectivity, together with good schools and greenbelt countryside close by, makes it popular with families while local festivals, pubs and riverside walks keep a distinct community feel.
