Sharpness sits in the district of Stroud in Gloucestershire, England, on the east bank of the River Severn at the mouth of the estuary. It developed in the 19th century as the terminus of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and is known for the long, deep-water Sharpness Dock and its industrial past serving coal, timber and oil traffic; the nearby Severn Railway Bridge once linked it to Lydney before collapsing in 1960.
Today Sharpness feels much quieter, with a small community centred on maritime activities, a marina and a few remaining industrial terminals, while the surrounding Severn Estuary mudflats and saltmarshes attract birdwatchers and nature lovers. Its combination of industrial heritage and important natural habitats gives the village an interesting, slightly rugged character that reflects both its economic history and conservation value.
