Smarden is a compact village and civil parish in the borough of Ashford in Kent, England, tucked into the rolling, wooded landscape of The Weald. It lies near the headwaters of the River Beult and between Ashford and Tenterden, retaining a strong rural character with a well‑defined village centre and much of its medieval street pattern intact.
The village is noted for its handsome timber‑framed buildings and dozens of listed houses, plus a parish church with medieval origins; historically the local economy was based on agriculture, hop growing and small‑scale cloth and milling industries. Today Smarden combines a lively community life with village shops and pubs, local events and a role as a desirable base for people working in nearby towns thanks to good local transport links.
