Gravesend is a riverside town in the borough of Gravesham in Kent, England, sitting on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Tilbury. It grew up as an important medieval river port and ferry point; the surviving Gravesend Town Pier (early 19th century) is one of the oldest cast‑iron piers and the town is famously linked with Pocahontas, who died here in 1617 and is commemorated at St George's Church.
Today Gravesend combines riverside heritage with a modern commuter and commercial role, with good rail links into London, retail and light industry along the waterfront and marshes. The town has a lively local scene - markets, riverside promenades and arts venues - reflecting a diverse community and the long history of life and trade along the Thames.
