Burnley

Local authority district in Lancashire, England

Coordinates:53.78, -2.24
OS grid ref:SD 84 31

Burnley is a compact local authority district in east Lancashire, in north‑west England, centred on the industrial town of Burnley and taking in smaller communities such as Padiham and rural uplands on the edge of the South Pennines. The town sits along the River Calder and the historic Leeds and Liverpool Canal, with prominent local landmarks and vistas that include Pendle Hill to the north and moorland to the east.

Once a centre of 19th‑century cotton weaving and mill building, the district still shows that industrial heritage in sites like the Weavers' Triangle while having diversified into engineering, manufacturing and newer digital and service firms. Cultural life is anchored by community institutions and by football at Turf Moor, and recent decades have seen active regeneration and community projects to address the social and economic challenges left by deindustrialisation.
