South Ribble

Local authority district in Lancashire, England

Coordinates:53.73, -2.68
OS grid ref:SD 55 25

South Ribble is a borough in Lancashire sitting immediately south of the River Ribble and close to Preston. It mixes suburban towns and villages with stretches of farmland and river floodplain, making it a popular commuter area with straightforward road and rail links into the wider North West.

There are a few local highlights that give the borough character: Leyland has a strong industrial heritage thanks to Leyland Motors and the continuing presence of vehicle manufacturing, while Samlesbury Hall and the neighbouring Samlesbury aerodrome recall older layers of local history and aviation and aerospace activity. For green space, Worden Park in Leyland and the floating reed-bed reserve at Brockholes draw families and birdwatchers alike.

Economically the area combines light manufacturing, aerospace and logistics with a large residential workforce who commute to nearby centres. Socially it feels like a collection of small towns rather than one big urban centre, with community events, pleasant walking and cycling routes along the Ribble and a straightforward mix of amenities for families and older residents.
