Holmeswood is a small village in the district of West Lancashire in the county of Lancashire, England. It sits on the low-lying West Lancashire Plain, historically part of the marshy peatlands around Martin Mere; much of the land was reclaimed and drained over the centuries, leaving a patchwork of pasture, hedgerows and small woods. The village’s origins are rural and agricultural, and you can still see historic buildings and the site of Holmeswood Hall, a former manor that hints at local manorial history.
Today Holmeswood is a quiet, close‑knit farming community with a mix of agricultural businesses and residents who commute to nearby towns such as Ormskirk or Southport. It benefits from proximity to country parks and wetland reserves - notably Rufford Abbey country park and the Martin Mere wetland centre - which support wildlife, birdwatching and outdoor recreation, while local social life often centres on village halls, churches and occasional community events.
