The villages of Tarleton and Hesketh Bank sit on the low-lying agricultural plain of West Lancashire in Lancashire, England. Close to the reclaimed wetlands of Martin Mere and the course of the River Douglas, the landscape is flat and criss-crossed by drainage channels, with wide views and a strong horticultural character dominated by market gardening and glasshouse production.
Historically the area grew out of peatland reclamation and canal and drainage works, and farming - particularly strawberries, salad crops and nurseries - still shapes the local economy, alongside commuting to nearby centres such as Preston and Southport. Both places have active village life with clubs, pubs and community events; glimpses of their industrial past remain in old railway and lock features, while recent housing growth has mixed long‑standing rural families with newer commuters.
