Perry Vale sits in the north of the London borough of Lewisham, tucked between Crystal Palace, Sydenham and Forest Hill. It’s largely residential, with a good stock of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, tree-lined streets and a small parade of shops along the road called Perry Vale; green lungs such as One Tree Hill and the gardens of the Horniman Museum are close by, giving the ward a leafy, village-like feel within London.
Historically the area expanded in the Victorian era along former coaching routes and the name recalls pear orchards that once filled the vale. Today it functions as a local hub in south-east London with a mixed community, independent cafés and shops, active neighbourhood groups concerned with housing and conservation, and decent rail links into central London via nearby Sydenham and Forest Hill stations.
