Rainham North sits in the northern part of the unitary authority of Medway and is largely a suburban, residential area that developed out of the old village of Rainham. It has a mix of Victorian and more modern housing, local shops and small industrial or business estates, with green spaces and views towards the River Medway and surrounding marshes that remind you of the area's agricultural and maritime past.
There are still historic touches - most notably the old parish church of St Margaret's - alongside everyday community life of schools, sports clubs and neighbourhood centres. Economically it functions partly as a commuter suburb with good road and rail links into the wider Medway towns and beyond, while retaining local events and community organisations that give the ward a distinctly local feel.
