Watling is a ward within the unitary authority of Medway in north Kent, taking its name from the historic Roman route Watling Street, which is largely followed today by the A2. The route gives the area strong road links and a clear historic identity, while the ward itself is predominantly residential with a mix of post-war and more recent housing.
Locally there are small parades of shops, community centres and green spaces that serve families and older residents alike, and many people commute into neighbouring towns such as Chatham and Gillingham or further afield to London. The ward’s character is shaped by its everyday community life and its links to the wider Medway conurbation and maritime history of the area.
