Cawood is a small village and civil parish in rural North Yorkshire, England, sitting on a bend of the River Ouse between Selby and York. Its riverside setting gives the village a distinct character of winding lanes, floodplain meadows and a compact centre with a church and a couple of traditional pubs, and many residents commute to the nearby towns for work while farming still shapes the surrounding landscape.
The village is best known for its medieval associations as a residence of the archbishops of York and for the remains of Cawood Castle, whose gatehouse and earthworks hint at that ecclesiastical past. Local interest is also piqued by finds such as the so‑called Cawood sword and by a strong village community that keeps traditions and local events alive alongside the quieter pace of rural life.
