The villages of Helperby and Brafferton lie side by side in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, a few miles from the market town of Boroughbridge and within easy commuting distance of York and Harrogate. They sit in a largely agricultural landscape of lanes, hedgerows and mixed farmland, with the compact, stone and brick-built character that is typical of this part of Yorkshire.
Both settlements have historic roots stretching back to the medieval period and retain a strong village focus: a parish church, village hall and local clubs help sustain an active community life. Farming still plays a significant role in the local economy, alongside a number of residents who commute to nearby towns, and the pair of villages are known for a close-knit, event-driven social scene rather than for heavy industry or tourism.
