Mansfield

Local authority district in Nottinghamshire, England

Coordinates:53.17, -1.18
OS grid ref:SK 55 64

The local authority district of Mansfield sits in north Nottinghamshire, centred on the market town of Mansfield about 12 miles north of Nottingham. The district mixes built-up neighbourhoods with rural fringes, lying close to the remnants of Sherwood Forest and crossed by the River Maun, with communities such as Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop forming part of its patchwork.

Historically the area grew around framework knitting and later coal mining; the decline of the pits prompted sustained regeneration, with retail and business parks alongside efforts to preserve local heritage. Mansfield still has a strong local identity - seen in its market, the Palace Theatre and the support for Mansfield Town football club - and is notable politically for having a directly elected mayor and a history of prominent independent local groupings.
