Southwell is a small historic market town in the district of Newark and Sherwood, Nottinghamshire, England, set amid gently rolling farmland just north of Nottingham and a few miles from Newark-on-Trent. It sits close to the little River Greet and retains a compact town centre of timber-framed and Georgian buildings that still serves local shops, cafés and a commuter population who work in the surrounding towns and cities.
Its principal attraction is Southwell Minster, the former minster now cathedral, famed for its medieval chapter house and finely carved capitals sometimes called the “Leaves of Southwell”. The town also hosts the well-preserved Southwell Workhouse (run by the National Trust), a nearby Southwell Racecourse, and a lively seasonal programme of music and cultural events, so tourism and heritage go hand in hand with agriculture and local services in the local economy.
