Plymouth is a coastal city and unitary authority on the south coast of England, in the ceremonial county of Devon. It sits between the mouth of the River Plym and the River Tamar, fronting a sweeping natural harbour known as Plymouth Sound, with the moorland of Dartmoor rising to the north.
Historically a major naval port centred on Devonport and its Royal Navy dockyard, Plymouth is famous for maritime links from Sir Francis Drake to the Mayflower Steps. Today it mixes defence and marine industries with tourism, a university, a growing creative and food scene, and waterfront regeneration around The Barbican and The Hoe; Drake's Island remains a distinctive local landmark. The city has diverse neighbourhoods and cultural venues, and, like many post‑industrial centres, faces social and economic challenges alongside ongoing reinvention.
