Compton is a mainly residential ward tucked just north of Plymouth city centre in Devon, within easy walking distance of the waterfront and the amenities of the city. It developed largely to house workers for the naval base and associated industries, so you’ll find a mix of Victorian terraces and mid-20th-century council housing, with pockets of more recent infill and regeneration projects.
Locally the area is anchored by community facilities, schools, small shops and sports pitches, and it has a strong neighbourhood feel with active residents’ groups and church-run activities. Like many inner-city wards, it has faced social and economic challenges over the years, but ongoing improvements to housing and public spaces mean it remains a pragmatic, well-connected part of Plymouth with a distinct local identity.
