Reading sits in the heart of the Thames Valley in Berkshire, where the River Kennet meets the River Thames. It occupies a compact riverside footprint with Caversham on the north bank and is well placed between London and Oxford, making it a major regional hub.
The town has deep medieval roots – the ruins of Reading Abbey and a history as a thriving market centre are still visible – but it’s equally known for contemporary culture, notably the long-running Reading Festival and a lively arts and theatre scene supported by the local university. The University of Reading brings a strong student presence and research activity to the area.
Economically, Reading combines a big retail core, riverside regeneration and a substantial office and tech sector that attracts national and international firms; the town is also a commuter favourite thanks to fast rail links into central London. Socially it’s diverse and evolving, with new housing and leisure developments alongside established neighbourhoods and community initiatives.
