Abbey is a central ward in Reading, sitting close to the confluence of the River Kennet and the River Thames. It’s perhaps best known for the remains of Reading Abbey and the pleasantly landscaped Forbury Gardens, which anchor the area’s historic heart and give the ward a strong sense of place amid the town centre.
The ward mixes retail, offices and residential streets, with riverside developments and new flats rubbing shoulders with older terraces. It’s within easy walking distance of Reading railway station and major shopping and leisure hubs such as The Oracle, so the population is diverse - students, commuters and long‑standing local communities - and the neighbourhood benefits from ongoing regeneration, cafés, pubs and riverside walks.
