Tilehurst sits on the western edge of Reading in the county of Berkshire, rising from the River Thames into a patchwork of hills and greenbelt countryside that gives wide views across the valley. Historically a village - its name hints at tile‑making and the old wooded 'hurst' - it now combines Victorian terraces, inter‑war and post‑war housing with local shops, community facilities and parts of the ward that border West Berkshire.
Good transport links, centred on Tilehurst railway station and regular buses, make commuting into Reading and onward to London or Oxford straightforward, so many residents work outside the ward. There’s an active local scene of schools, pubs, small businesses and residents’ groups, and the mix of suburban amenities with easy access to countryside is a defining feature of the area.
