Littleborough is a small mill town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, historically in Lancashire and sitting on the edge of the Pennines. It nestles by the River Roch and the Rochdale Canal, with easy rail links into Manchester and Leeds, and is overlooked by moorland such as Blackstone Edge. Just to the north is Hollingworth Lake, a Victorian reservoir turned popular country park for sailing, windsurfing, birdwatching and walkers heading into the hills.
Littleborough has a strong industrial heritage from the 19th-century cotton and woollen mills, many of whose stone buildings have been converted to housing or light industry, and there are still traditional terraces and local pubs at the heart of community life. Today it functions partly as a commuter town but retains a lively local scene of independent shops, clubs and outdoor-orientated activities, making it a convenient gateway for people exploring the South Pennines countryside.
