The area sits on the eastern edge of Rochdale in Greater Manchester, encompassing the adjoining communities of Milnrow and Newhey. It has a mixed character of suburban streets and the moorland fringe, with ready access to the Pennines and nearby recreational green space such as Hollingworth Lake, while the local rivers and canal give parts of the neighbourhood a pleasant waterside feel.
Historically the communities grew around cotton mills and Victorian industry, and many former mill buildings and terraces remain alongside more modern housing. Today the area is largely residential with local shops, light industry and a commuter catchment to Manchester; it also retains a strong community life through sports clubs, festivals and volunteer groups, with ongoing regeneration projects aimed at improving facilities and employment opportunities.
