Maltby is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Set on the borough’s eastern edge amid rolling farmland, it developed from an agricultural village into a larger settlement with the arrival of deep coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The town’s character is still shaped by its industrial past - notably Maltby Main Colliery - whose closure in 2013 prompted economic change and local regeneration. Today the local economy mixes light industry, retail and commuting to nearby urban centres, while a strong sense of community persists through sports clubs such as Maltby Main F.C., local organisations and heritage groups that preserve the mining memory alongside older parish and village traditions.
