Rutland

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:52.64, -0.63
OS grid ref:SK 92 05

Rutland is England’s smallest historic county and a unitary authority in the East Midlands. Its compact patchwork of rolling farmland, small market towns and stone villages centres on the county town of Oakham, with notable neighbouring towns such as Uppingham giving the area a distinctly rural, small‑town character.

Geographically the most striking feature is Rutland Water, a large reservoir and nature reserve that draws birdwatchers, walkers, sailors and cyclists to its shores and trails. Cultural highlights include Oakham Castle with its famous horseshoes and the historic independent school in Uppingham; locally the economy is driven by agriculture, tourism, small businesses and a modest number of commuters to nearby cities.

Administratively Rutland was absorbed into Leicestershire in the 1970s but was restored as a separate unitary authority in the 1990s, which feeds into a strong local identity and community pride. With a population of only a few tens of thousands, it’s known for a relaxed pace of life, active conservation efforts and seasonal county events that keep community life lively.
