Swinton is a town in the City of Salford, in Greater Manchester, lying a few miles north‑west of Manchester city centre on the banks of the River Irwell. Historically part of Lancashire, it grew up around 19th‑century coal, textile and engineering industries and sits adjacent to Pendlebury and other suburban centres; today it functions largely as a residential and commuter town with local retail centres and rail and road links into the wider conurbation.
