Stocksbridge is a former industrial town on the western outskirts of the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. It grew up around the 19th-century steel and wireworks founded by Samuel Fox, whose umbrella-frame manufacture helped shape the town’s identity, and the long-running Stocksbridge Steelworks has been central to local employment. The settlement sits in a steep-sided valley of the River Don on the edge of the Pennines, with reservoirs and moorland close by that make it popular with walkers and cyclists.
The community still bears a strong industrial character but has diversified with small businesses and many people commuting into Sheffield. Local life is marked by close-knit clubs and organisations - for example Stocksbridge Park Steels football club - and there is a visible mix of post‑industrial heritage and accessible green spaces.
