Bishop's Castle is a small market town and civil parish in west Shropshire, close to the Welsh border and tucked into the rolling hills of the Shropshire Hills AONB. It grew up around a medieval motte-and-bailey held by the bishops of Hereford, with surviving earthworks and a compact historic centre carved by the course of the River Onny, giving the town its steep, narrow streets and rural charm.
Despite its size, Bishop's Castle has a lively independent character: long-established pubs (notably the historic Three Tuns), microbreweries, galleries, craft shops and regular markets and festivals all contribute to a busy cultural life. Agriculture and hill farming remain important locally, while walking, cycling and heritage tourism sustain the economy and a strong community spirit keeps local initiatives and events well supported.
