Pilning is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England, sitting on the flat, reclaimed marshes of the north bank of the Severn Estuary. Its setting is dominated by the huge tidal estuary and nearby transport corridors - the M4/M5 interchange and the Severn Bridge are close by - and the mudflats and saltmarsh around the village make it notable for birdlife and changing coastal landscapes.
Historically the area was shaped by crossings of the estuary (the old New Passage ferry routes) and later by road and rail, and today residents often commute to Bristol or Cardiff while local employment comes from nearby industrial zones such as Avonmouth and the Severnside estate. The village retains a quiet, rural character despite its proximity to heavy industry and major routes, with a small local community, a scant rail service on the Severn Beach line and ongoing local concerns about flood risk and coastal change.
