Norbury and Woodsmoor sit in the southern part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in Greater Manchester, forming a mostly suburban area of family housing, small parades of shops and pockets of green space. The area is popular with commuters thanks to Woodsmoor railway station on the Manchester–Buxton line and is within easy commuting distance of Manchester, while the hills of the Peak District are also a short drive away.
Historically the district moved from semi‑rural land to a railway‑led suburb in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving a mix of Victorian and later housing that gives the neighbourhood a varied character. Local life tends to centre on neighbourhood amenities and community groups, with a quieter, residential feel compared with the busier town centre of Stockport a few miles to the north.
