Stockport

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:53.39, -2.12
OS grid ref:SJ 92 88

Stockport sits astride the River Mersey at the southern edge of Greater Manchester, its town centre folded into a steep-sided valley that gives the place a dramatic feel. The borough forms a fringe between the city and the countryside, with easy access to the Peak District and plenty of riverside green space in the Mersey Valley.

Its 19th-century industrial boom left a strong imprint: the brick arches of the Stockport Viaduct are a local landmark and the Hat Works museum celebrates the town’s historic hatting and textile trades. There’s also a lively cultural side, from the restored art-deco Stockport Plaza to regular markets and community festivals that keep the town’s social life active.

Today Stockport functions as both a self-contained economy and a commuter hub, with direct rail links into Manchester and quick access to the M60, supporting retail, services and light industry. Surrounding suburbs such as Bramhall, Cheadle, Reddish, Hazel Grove and Marple mix leafy residential neighbourhoods with ongoing regeneration schemes aimed at revitalising the town centre and places like the Merseyway shopping area.
