Iken is a tiny coastal parish in East Suffolk, set on the north side of the tidal River Alde where marshes and a dramatic cliff line meet the estuary. The hamlet is traditionally identified with Bede’s Icanho and the local church is dedicated to St Botolph, giving the place a long historical resonance amid reedbeds, saltmarsh and the shifting shingle of the Suffolk coast.
Today Iken feels quietly rural: agriculture and conservation dominate the local economy, while birdwatching, sailing on the estuary and walking the nearby footpaths attract visitors. Its small community is linked to neighbouring villages such as Snape and Orford, and the wider landscape sits within the characterful Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, prized for wildlife and coastal scenery.
