Suffolk is a largely rural county in East Anglia, famous for its low-lying coast, wide estuaries and expanses of heath and farmland. The landscape ranges from the gentle, picture-postcard scenes of Dedham Vale (often called Constable Country) to the sandy shores and colourful piers of towns such as Aldeburgh and Southwold, with important waterways like the River Stour and River Orwell shaping its character.
Historically and culturally it punches above its weight: the Anglo-Saxon burial at Sutton Hoo sits alongside medieval wool churches and castles such as Framlingham. Economically the county mixes agriculture and tourism with major modern infrastructure - the container port at Felixstowe and the nuclear station at Sizewell are significant employers - while market towns like Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Woodbridge sustain lively local arts, food and music scenes, exemplified by the long-running festival at Aldeburgh.
