West Thurrock and South Stifford sit in the borough of Thurrock on the north bank of the River Thames, looking out towards the Port of Tilbury. The area has a strong industrial past - cement works and a now-demolished power station once defined the skyline - that has gradually given way to large-scale retail and logistics, most visibly around Lakeside Shopping Centre; excellent road and rail links via the M25, the A13 and nearby stations at Grays and Chafford Hundred make it an important commuter and distribution hub for London.
South Stifford itself is more residential, with older village roots alongside post‑war and social housing, and it has been the focus of local regeneration and community initiatives in recent years. The juxtaposition of riverside industrial heritage, pockets of green space and a multicultural local population gives the neighbourhood a distinct character: a place of contrasts where retail and logistics economies sit beside ongoing social and housing challenges.
