Tower Hamlets

London borough in England

Coordinates:51.51, -0.04
OS grid ref:TQ 36 81

Tower Hamlets sits in east London, hugging a long stretch of the River Thames and taking in the distinctive curve of the Isle of Dogs. It grew out of the docks and industries of the East End, with centuries of maritime trade and close links to the nearby Tower of London; that industrial past is still visible in converted warehouses, canals and at the Museum of London Docklands.

The borough is one of the capital’s most diverse, with a large Bangladeshi community concentrated around Brick Lane and Whitechapel. You’ll find lively street food, markets and arts scenes - from Spitalfields Market to the Columbia Road Flower Market and the contemporary programmes at the Whitechapel Gallery - alongside a layered social history including the Blitz and Victorian-era developments.

Economically the area is full of contrasts: the glass towers of Canary Wharf and the financial district on the Isle of Dogs sit beside post‑war social housing estates and neighbourhoods facing deprivation. Recent regeneration has delivered jobs and rising property values but also prompted debates about gentrification and displacement, making Tower Hamlets a striking example of rapid change meeting deep-rooted local character.
