Tower Hamlets sits in East London on the north bank of the River Thames, immediately east of the City of London. The borough ranges from the historic fortress of the Tower of London and the market streets of Spitalfields and Whitechapel to the glass towers of Canary Wharf in the redeveloped Docklands, giving it a striking riverside-to-inner‑city geography.
Historically part of the East End, the area has long been shaped by docks, industry and successive waves of immigration; today it is known for a large British Bangladeshi community around Brick Lane, lively street markets and a thriving arts and nightlife scene. At the same time Canary Wharf brings high‑paid financial jobs and rapid redevelopment, creating visible contrasts with longstanding social housing and pockets of deprivation, so Tower Hamlets remains one of London’s most dynamic and contested boroughs.
