Featherstone sits in the metropolitan borough of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, on the edge of the old Yorkshire coalfield between Pontefract and Normanton. The town has a compact centre of terraces, local shops and community facilities, with decent rail and road links that make it a practical commuter base for nearby urban centres such as Wakefield and Leeds.
Featherstone’s identity was forged by coal mining and the social institutions that came with it - miners’ institutes, a strong trade-union tradition and a community shaped by the boom-and-bust history of the pits. That industrial past sits alongside a proud sporting culture, most famously as the home of Featherstone Rovers rugby league club, and today the town mixes light industry, local retail and ongoing regeneration with an active community spirit.
