Normanton is a market town in the City of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, England. Historically it expanded rapidly in the 19th century as a coal‑mining and railway centre - its station was once an important junction on the Midland Railway - and the town sits close to waterways such as the Aire & Calder Navigation and the River Calder, roughly between Leeds and Pontefract.
Today Normanton largely functions as a commuter and local-service town with pockets of light industry and retail, and several redevelopments on former colliery sites. The community has active amateur sports clubs and local organisations, and the town retains a mix of Victorian streets, post‑war housing and newer developments reflecting its shift from heavy industry to more residential and service‑based uses.
