The district of Mid Sussex sits in northern West Sussex, roughly halfway between London and the English Channel. Its largest settlements are Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead, which act as commuter hubs with regular rail services to London and good road links including the A23 and proximity to Gatwick Airport.
The landscape is a mix of rolling farmland, ancient woodland and chalk downland on the edge of the South Downs National Park and the High Weald, with plentiful public footpaths, National Trust houses and local nature reserves. Historic roots are visible in medieval market centres and in the Victorian suburban growth that followed the arrival of the railway in the 19th century.
Culturally and economically the area balances commuter pressures with a lively local scene: independent shops, farmers’ markets, small business parks and creative and digital firms sit alongside traditional agriculture. Community festivals, outdoor recreation and local heritage attractions make the district popular to live in, even as development and housing remain regular topics of local debate in towns such as Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath.
