East Grinstead is a historic market town in the Mid Sussex district of West Sussex, England, sitting on the north‑eastern edge of the county close to Surrey and Kent and bordering the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with easy access to Ashdown Forest. Its long, timber‑framed High Street preserves a medieval character born of the Weald iron trade, and the town is the northern terminus of the preserved Bluebell Railway, a popular heritage line that draws steam enthusiasts from the region.
East Grinstead is also notable for the Queen Victoria Hospital, where pioneering plastic surgery for RAF airmen in the Second World War gave rise to the Guinea Pig Club, and for Saint Hill Manor, a striking Georgian house with an unusual modern history. Today the town functions as a busy commuter and market centre with independent shops, cafés and regular community events, benefiting from good rail links to London and proximity to Gatwick while retaining attractive surrounding countryside.
