Abram is a former mining village and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester and historically part of Lancashire. It sits to the south of the town centre, close to Leigh, and is notable for the low-lying wetlands known as Abram Flashes, wetlands created by former mining subsidence that are now valued for birdlife and informal recreation.
The area’s identity was shaped by coal mining and the legacy of pits such as Abram Colliery; after closures in the mid-20th century the community experienced economic change but retains strong local institutions - churches, social clubs and sports teams - and a mix of housing with ongoing regeneration efforts. Many residents commute to nearby Wigan and Manchester, while green spaces and the flashes provide a visible link to both its industrial past and its natural recovery.
